ARTIST STATEMENT

Here on the coast, the W̱SÁNEĆ people have known that the land, sea, and sky are all intimately interconnected. The land gives nutrients to the sea and the moon guides the tides. The W̱SÁNEĆ people have lived by a 13 moon calendar since time immemorial in which we live by the natural laws of the land. We ebb and flow through the seasons like the currents around the islands.

This design emulates those beliefs; our ways of being are informed by this place and the land/sea have taught us how to live here in a reciprocal and respectful way. The moon phases teach us that life and time are cyclical. The plants are seen as kin and they take care of us by providing food, medicine, and materials. The ocean is our life line, our highway, our economy, and our medicine. We are saltwater people. This design honours the sacred relationships between the natural realm and the reverence that the original people of these lands have for the land, sea, and sky.
