THE ARTISTS

Rachel Wada

Rachel Wada was raised between Japan and Hong Kong and is currently based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has created illustrations for children's books, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, and murals. The Phone Booth in Mr. Hirota's Garden, her debut as a children’s book illustrator, received the Freeman Award for Children's Literature. Rachel's multi-cultural background, as well as her experience as an immigrant to Canada, continue to inform and inspire her artistic practice.
She loves creating artwork that empowers and amplifies Asian cultures and communities.

Samantha Paul

Samantha Paul is an artist and designer living in beautiful Shawnigan Lake, BC. Using bold colours, clean lines and classic materials like charcoal and pencil, drawing her inspiration from BC's scenic outdoor landscapes. With close to 10 years experience designing and many of those for the Rifflandia Festival, Victoria's civic Canada Day celebrations, Phillips Backyard Weekender, We the West Tournament with the FOQT, and many more. Samantha enjoys discovering new and creative art styles that help her deliver custom pieces and enjoys volunteering her time and design to non-profit and female run businesses, and most days can be found enjoying a local beach with her daughter, husband and pooch.

Emily Thiessen

Emily Thiessen is an artist and illustrator with a fire for creative troublemaking. She comes from Chinese-Malaysian and Mennonite roots and grew up here on beautiful Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ Territories.

Her art is often about magical places and people power.

The Woodpile Collective

Since the spring of 2003, the Woodpile's collaborative artistic history has been consistent and prolific. The collective's pieces can be found both in conventional gallery settings, and as unexpected public art drops.

The process of their collaboration is free-flowing and always open to one another's re-interpretation. As they step up to the canvas they paint as one. Six hands and three minds processing one another's marks and working in the moment, the painting unfolds like a conversation between friends.
This process is rooted at the core of the Woodpile and all its creative endeavours.

Founding members Shawn O'Keefe, Blythe Hailey, and Sean McLaughlin reside in Victoria B.C. Canada.

Sarah Jim

Sarah Jim is an emerging artist of mixed ancestry and is a member of the W̱SÁNEĆ nation from the Tseycum village.

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria and conducts environmental restoration on her ancestral territory. Creating place-based artwork of her homelands and waters allows her to bring awareness to the importance of native plant food systems, coastal medicines, and traditional practices in relation to the ecosystem and W̱SÁNEĆ culture.

Jake Johnston

Jake Johnston, also known as ‘TikTok’ (a creative pseudonym founded in 2004) is an Abstract Geometric Artist currently working out of Vancouver, BC. His youthful mischievousness would initially enter him into the world of art via the avenue of Graffiti, teaching him the tools and techniques that are currently used in his paintings today.
